Foyer Gallery 2014 – Dreams of Spring

I’m participating in the next exhibition at the Foyer Gallery. It is a group show with the theme Dreams of Spring and features work by most or all of the 24 artists of the Foyer Gallery. Each member presents several pieces of work depending on size and I will be showing four spring related photographs. The poster shows one of my images called Bachelor’s Buttons Over Creeping Jenny (2nd row, 1st image). This image was taken in our front garden in early spring. Just when the tulips are finishing the Bachelor’s Buttons take over. The yellow background is caused by the ground cover called Creeping Jenny which is yellow in the spring and turns green later in the year. Throwing the Creeping Jenny out of focus gives a dreamy effect to this Dreams of Spring image.

Foyer Gallery 2014 – Colour of Cold

I’m participating in the next exhibition at the Foyer Gallery. It is a group show with the theme Colour of Cold and features work by all 26 of the artists of the Foyer Gallery. Each member presents 1 to 3 pieces of work depending on size and I will be showing three winter related photographs. The poster shows one of my images called Frosted Seed Heads (3rd row, 3rd image). This image was taken in our front garden after the frosts had killed our perennial plants. Here we have dried stems of Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia) with morning frost balancing on the seed heads.

Foyer Gallery 2014 – Beyond Limits

I’ll be showing again at the Foyer Gallery in the Nepean Sportsplex. This time it is a focus show titled “Beyond Limits”, with only 4 artists exhibiting work. That means that I will be displaying work in about 1/4 of the gallery. All of my work will consist of aerial views, most of which were taken with Kite Aerial Photography (a remote-controlled camera suspended below a kite).

Other artwork in this show includes architectural photography by Mario Cerroni and paintings by Jess Fleury and Ray Piesina.

We would love it if you could attend the vernissage on Sunday, February 2, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Foyer Gallery 2014 – Child’s Play

Starting with the 2014 calendar year, I am a member of a cooperative of artists running the Foyer Gallery. Situated just inside the front entrance of the Nepean Sportsplex, the Foyer Gallery showcases original works of art created by a select group of visual artists from the Ottawa area. Gallery members work in a wide variety of media, ranging from oils, watercolours, acrylics, fibre art and photography to sculptural works in wood, metal, clay, marble and glass.

The first show in which I am involved starts this coming week. It is a group show with the theme Child’s Play and features work by the 7 new artists (3 pieces each) including me, plus a single work by each of the longer standing members of the gallery. I will be showing three images from my “Kites on White” series. The poster shows one of my images with the tail of the kite running across the whole poster. I’m really pleased to have my image shown that way in the advertisement.

Aerial photos of the Ottawa River on display at the offices of Ottawa Riverkeeper

I have recently been invited to display 5 photographs in the entranceway to the offices of the Ottawa Riverkeeper – ottawariverkeeper.ca
These are kite aerial phographs of the Ottawa River. This exhibit will be on display for a six month period, to the end of May.

The offices are above Trailhead on the third floor. So the next time you drop by the Trailhead store, go through the office entrance at the left and up to the third floor to room 301.
Nov 20, 2012 to approx. May 31, 2013

Here are the 5 images on display (captions courtesy of Alexandra Brett of the Ottawa Riverkeeper):

Chaudiere Falls aerial panorama including the former E.B. Eddy property, the city of Gatineau across the Ottawa River and the Parliament Buildings in the distance at the top right.

The view across the Ottawa River at the former E.B. Eddy paper mill shows the once-thundering Chaudière Falls tamed by dams and diversions. Over 60 m wide, and with a drop of 15 m, the falls powered the growth of Hull (seen across the river) and the City of Ottawa from 1800 onward. Two hydro stations still operate on Chaudière Falls.

Aerial panorama photograph of Lemieux Island and the Prince of Wales Railroad Bridge, Ottawa River.

The City of Ottawa draws its drinking water from the Ottawa River. The Lemieux Island Plant, seen here, is one of two water-treatment facilities run by the City. Ottawa’s drinking water is rated as some of the safest in the world, but damage to the river caused by sewage, pollution, dams and shoreline destruction put our drinking water at risk.

Rugged shoreline in winter at Deschenes Rapids near Aylmer, Quebec. This is the Ottawa River, near Ottawa, Ontario. This picture was taken from a camera rig suspended below a kite (Kite Aerial Photography - KAP).

Over 90% of a river’s life depends on the first few metres next to the shore, the area most likely to be damaged by riverside development. Maintaining natural shorelines with trees and shrubs – as seen here at Deschênes Rapids – helps stabilize banks and protect the river from pollutants and sediment in storm water.

The Ottawa River hosts 10 yacht clubs in the Ottawa-Gatineau region alone. Canoes, kayaks, power boats – even Olympic-class rowing shells – also ply the river’s many reaches and bays. Here, sailboats at Nepean Sailing Club in Ottawa’s west end quietly await their next regatta.

A sailboat on the Ottawa River passes Pinhey’s Point, part of Pinhey’s Point Historical Site. The estate, built in 1820 by Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey, has been preserved as a museum. The Ottawa River is home to 8 national historic sites and numerous pioneer villages, interpretive centres, community museums and historic houses.
