Aerial photos of the Ottawa River on display at the offices of Ottawa Riverkeeper
I have recently been invited to display 5 photographs in the entranceway to the offices of the Ottawa Riverkeeper – ottawariverkeeper.ca
These are kite aerial phographs of the Ottawa River. This exhibit will be on display for a six month period, to the end of May.
The offices are above Trailhead on the third floor. So the next time you drop by the Trailhead store, go through the office entrance at the left and up to the third floor to room 301.

The view across the Ottawa River at the former E.B. Eddy paper mill shows the once-thundering Chaudière Falls tamed by dams and diversions. Over 60 m wide, and with a drop of 15 m, the falls powered the growth of Hull (seen across the river) and the City of Ottawa from 1800 onward. Two hydro stations still operate on Chaudière Falls.

The City of Ottawa draws its drinking water from the Ottawa River. The Lemieux Island Plant, seen here, is one of two water-treatment facilities run by the City. Ottawa’s drinking water is rated as some of the safest in the world, but damage to the river caused by sewage, pollution, dams and shoreline destruction put our drinking water at risk.

Over 90% of a river’s life depends on the first few metres next to the shore, the area most likely to be damaged by riverside development. Maintaining natural shorelines with trees and shrubs – as seen here at Deschênes Rapids – helps stabilize banks and protect the river from pollutants and sediment in storm water.

The Ottawa River hosts 10 yacht clubs in the Ottawa-Gatineau region alone. Canoes, kayaks, power boats – even Olympic-class rowing shells – also ply the river’s many reaches and bays. Here, sailboats at Nepean Sailing Club in Ottawa’s west end quietly await their next regatta.

A sailboat on the Ottawa River passes Pinhey’s Point, part of Pinhey’s Point Historical Site. The estate, built in 1820 by Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey, has been preserved as a museum. The Ottawa River is home to 8 national historic sites and numerous pioneer villages, interpretive centres, community museums and historic houses.

I mentioned in an earlier post that this will be my first year as an artisan in the Churchill Alternative School Annual Holiday Craft Fair!. A week later I will also be participating in the Fisher Park Community Centre Christmas Craft Show and Sale. So if you miss me at Churchill, you can catch me at Fisher Park.

West End Studio Tour 2012
I’m participating in the West End Studio Tour (WEST) again. This is my third year.
W.E.S.T. is in its 17th year and for 2012 has 16 artists showing a variety of art works. I’m one of two photographers on the Tour. My gallery is in my home at 480 Denbury Ave.

Low-Level Aerial Photography Using a Kite – Presenting at the RA Photo Club on Feb. 7, 2012

Low-Level Aerial Photography Using a Kite by Rob Huntley
Presentation: Putting a camera at an elevated perspective, closer to subjects than shooting from an aircraft, and without your feet leaving the ground is the idea behind Kite Aerial Photography, or KAP as it is called by practitioners. KAP is a relatively low-cost, portable and environmentally friendly way to achieve aerial photographs. It is not without risks and moments of anxiety. It can also be time consuming and often physically demanding. Composition control may have to be sacrificed in exchange for unique perspective but KAP is a great approach for capturing unique documentary images. With experience one can also produce striking artistic compositions not visible from the ground.
About Rob Huntley: Rob lives in the Highland Park/McKellar Park community of Ottawa. His primary photographic interests are landscape and travel photography plus a somewhat novel approach to aerial photography using a remote-controlled camera suspended below a kite line. He is always looking for unique angles whether they be aerial shots or images taken closer to the ground. Rob exhibits his work during the West End Studio Tour each year during the last two weekends of September. He is a member of the Camera Club of Ottawa and has given presentations at his club as well as at the Orléans Photo Club. Rob’s stock images can be found in the catalogues of leading agencies such as Getty Images and iStockphoto. He does custom aerial photography on commission. His website is www.RobHuntley.ca
