Pictures of Cuba

Umbrella Man is the title of the newest of Peggy Blair’s Inspector Ramirez novels, a series based in Havana, Cuba.

The book launch of Umbrella Man, combined with a gallery show of Cuba Photography will take place at Cake and Shake, a coffee shop in the Parkdale Market area of Ottawa.

There will be a photography exhibit by several photographers including myself in support of Peggy’s book launch.

KAP 2011-18 – Pinhey’s Point, Ottawa River – November 9, 2011

This was my third kite aerial photography session at Pinhey’s Point. The Pinhey’s Point Foundation is a group which has indicated an interest in my photography with the prospect of doing a demonstration and photo display next summer. Thus, I have incentive to return from time to time. This time I went with the hope for some fall colour remaining and early enough in the day to have the front of the building (river-facing side) illuminated with morning light. Being late in the year with the sun in the south east, 10:00 a.m. was not early enough as the front was already in shadow. However, the lighting was diffused enough this day that the shadows were not too harsh and the results were pretty good in my opinion.

I was accompanied during this session by friend and photographer Bruce Amos. Together we represented 2/3 of our Photo Boyz trio. Hey Murray, next time maybe?

Pinhey’s Point is on the Ontario side of the Ottawa River, just upstream from Ottawa (Kanata) near the small village of Dunrobin. It is an 88 acre heritage site administered by the City of Ottawa. For more information visit the Pinhey’s Point website.

KAP 2011-2 – Big Cedar Lake near Messines, Quebec – January 24, 2011

This Kite Aerial Photography session took place on Big Cedar Lake near Messines, Québec. I travelled to the cottage of my friend Bruce Amos (www.BruceAmos.com) and went out on the lake where the temperature was in the -30’s C. Low wind meant little wind chill but low wind also meant a struggle with the gear. I had already planned to use autokap with the cold temperatures so as to minimize the fiddly work of using the remote and thus be able to take advantage of thicker mitts for part of the time. With there being little wind, autokap was definitely a good idea and the smaller rig was just barely lifted with my levi-light delta kite. Much of the time was spent with the camera and rig just a few feet off the ground so many unintentional self-portraits were taken. I include only a couple in my website gallery but may do a story on KAP in the cold weather on my blog at a later date and use some of the self-deprecating images there. I’ll edit this and post a link if and when I do that.

Also, pictures of the cottage included me as well since the wind was blowing away from the cottage shoreline. I had hoped to move to a different position to capture the cottage without me but the kite was being temperamental in the low wind. (Anyway, I’m easy enough to clone out in PhotoShop if I need to – easy to replace me and all the tracks with just snow). I had also hoped to do some scenic shots of nearby islands which necessitated walking the kite downwind which was not permitted with the conditions.

Photo Boyz at Mooney’s Bay

My previous Photo Boyz piece was about the 2nd outing by our threesome. I’ve decided to backtrack and cover outing number one for the sake of completeness and hopefully we will sporadically move forward from here with further sessions. Photo Boyz includes Bruce Amos, Murray McComb and myself.

Our first time out was on September 17, 2009 and it preceded one of our monthly beverage nights. Murray proposed that we join him two hours beforehand at Mooney’s Bay Beach in Ottawa where he was going to experiment with sunset action shots of kayaker John Ferguson. Bruce and I tagged along and tried to get action of the action shooter. I took my kite aerial gear but as luck would have it conditions did not favour getting the camera anywhere near the subject so I moved on to other stuff.

Photo Boyz at the Arboretum

Bruce Amos, Murray McComb and myself have been having an evening out once a month for the past 18-24 months (I’ve lost track of time). We meet over a couple of cold ones and a plate of wings, checking out various establishments in the city and discussing whatever photographic and other subjects come to mind. Our April 22nd, 2010 meeting coincided with an Ottawa Senators playoff game and even if we’d tried to find a place in a pub, the atmosphere would not have been conducive to talking photography. So instead we decided to record the game for ourselves and have an evening photo outing at the arboretum, part of the Central Experimental Farm of Agriculture Canada located not far from city centre . Despite our months of talking cameras and pixels, this was only the second time we’d all three had cameras out at the same time and place.
