Foyer Gallery 2015 – Passion for Colour

The current show at Foyer Gallery is titled Passion for Colour. I’m late in announcing this one as I have been away.  It started on February 17th and continues until March 8th, so you still have the rest of this week to attend. This show is a group show featuring work by most of the members of the Foyer Gallery. Each member presents several pieces of work depending on size and I am showing three framed prints. I didn’t make it on to the poster unfortunately.

Westwood Park In Autumn, Ottawa, Ontario

Westwood Park in Autumn.

Westwood Park in Autumn.

Westwood Park is in the Carlingwood area in the west end of Ottawa, Ontario. It is at the intersection of Saville Row and Sherbourne Avenue. For a number of years I have remarked to myself on the beautiful fall colours and compositions that are available at the back end of the park. Finally this year I chose to ‘not’ drive past as I have done many times in previous years. These images were shot on November 1, 2011. This is late in the year for fall colour in our area. For the past few years autumn has seemed to last relatively long. No complaints. Nice weather, great colour and less winter.

KAP 2011-16 – Lebreton Flats at Bayview Transitway Station – October 30, 2011

This session was planned to take advantage of the late afternoon light shining on the Ottawa Skyline. The view is always great when driving along the Ottawa River Parkway towards the city over the rise at the level of Lemieux Island and the Bayview Transitway Station. So I made the goal of this outing to make low-level aerial images of the nicely lit skyline with the Ottawa River Parkway providing lead-in lines. The wind was great for the FLED with fully remote rig. I took advantage of the location to also take shots of the Bayview Transitway Station, Lemieux Island and the old Prince of Wales Railroad Bridge, and the transitway in two directions: leading into the city and also leading away from the city alongside Scott Street (but shooting more or less into the sun).

These images were taken from a camera suspended below a kite line, a method known as kite aerial photography or KAP for short.

KAP 2011-14 – Shouldice Berry Farm – October 27, 2011

Aerial photography taken during a session at Shouldice Berry Farm on Richmond Road in Ottawa.

The objective of this session was to obtain aerial photographs of the junction of Highway 417 and 416. Uncooperative winds, poor light and misjudgement of required gear meant that the results were limited in scope and the lighting was a bit flat. This would be worth of a second attempt in the future. I`d like to get higher and perhaps a bit further away to obtain some shots of the whole junction. Nevertheless I am pretty happy with the results all things considered.

I had very few shots taken after trying my fully remote gear for over an hour. It was not until I put autokap equipment on the line that I managed to get any results at all. I may have had more success with remote controlled gear with my Fled kite. I was using a 6 1/2 foot ROK which required stronger winds which was a misjudgement on my part. I had the Fled in the car and I should have gone for it sooner but when the time came to change gear I knew the light was failing and the return trip to where it was parked would have been a waste of time. Since I had autokap in my bag I quickly changed it and managed about 10 minutes before I lost enough wind for that too. Again, the Fled would have worked better but the light by now was very poor. All of the images in this gallery came from the 10 minutes of autokap.

Ironically, I normally carry more than one kite when venturing far from the car. I blew it this time.

These low-level aerial images were taken from a camera suspended below a kite line (Kite Aerial Photography – KAP).

Beaver Pond Reflections, Gatineau Park

Beaver Pond Reflections, Gatineau Park, Quebec.

Beaver Pond Reflections, Gatineau Park, Quebec.

There are a number of beaver ponds and swamps in Gatineau Park and interesting images abound if you are prepared for a hike and often some bushwhacking. The place I visited during this session I had discovered while hiking with a friend a few years ago. With the goal then being the hike, not the photography, I made a mental note of the location. Finally I returned this fall and the scenery was as rewarding as I had expected.

At this site there is a series of three ponds; however the top pond is more of a drained swamp. It seems this pond is not being maintained by the beavers unless park officials are directing/interfering with their developments. The bottom two ponds are smaller, relatively free of deadwood standing out of the ponds and closely lined with trees. The reflections as you can see are amazing.

WARNING: Beaver habitat can be dangerous. Do not be guilty of admiring the landscape and scenery without paying attention to your footwork. This is not to be taken lightly. Why? Although the typical image of beaver activity is large tree stumps and fallen tree trunks, for every large tree felled there are dozens of 1″ to 2″ diameter saplings chopped at about 18″ in length and chiseled to a fine point. The rest of the sapling has been hauled away and only the spike remains. Even in open terrain they are well enough camouflaged, but in typical beaver terrain where new trees, grasses and shrubs have grown over, these spikes are frequently hidden from view. You are likely to trip on one and impale your body or your face on the next. Why so morbid? Well I had a close call myself a couple of years ago. I now try to practice a policy of taking 30 or so steps with my eyes glued to the ground, stopping, and then looking around for appealing shots or where to go next.
