The Ontario side of the Ottawa River at the Deschênes Rapids is the location of several features: the community of Britannia, the Britannia Water Purification Plant (serving the city of Ottawa), the Britannia Yacht Club, and Mud Lake which has become an urban wildlife watching location. Not too far upstream is Britannia Beach, a popular recreation area. The town of Deschênes, which shares the name with the rapids, is on the Quebec side of the river.

KAP 2008-20: Luskville Falls, Luskville, Québec, Canada. April 26, 2008.

These shots were taken during a field trip to Luskville Falls, Québec (near Ottawa, Ontario) with the Flickr Ottawa Group. I walked into the falls first of all and took several image of the falls (at ground level). Later I went to try some Kite Aerial Photography but I couldn’t get close to the falls due to trees. A south wind would have taken the rig somewhat closer so perhaps I will try again one day. These aerial shots are taken from beside the parking and picnic area as I was determined to take some aerial pictures that day. Unfortunately there were no significant items of interest in the area.

You can barely see the falls in the distance:

KAP 2008-18: Merrickville, Ontario, Canada. April 13, 2008.

Always double check your settings before launching your camera before launching it for an hour. I believed I had set the camera correctly at home before leaving but was wrong. This session was shot incorrectly at aperture f8 (aperture priority) making shutter speeds considerably slower than I would have preferred. This error resulted in a number of images with slight motion blur making them appear out of focus. They had to be discarded, particularly those when the sun disappeared behind cloud. F4 or lower would have been more appropriate.

This was a group KAP, to coincide with the California KAP weekend. Our part in trying to promote a worldwide KAP weekend and three of us got together: myself,

(Incidentally a Worldwide KAP Weekend did get “off the ground” several weeks later first weekend in May on which I will report later.)

KAP 2008-12: Rideau Falls in Winter, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. March 13, 2008.

The building of the Rideau Canal system is one of the main factors in the development of the city of Ottawa in the first place. The Rideau River system supports the canal and the many series of locks, and enables the controlled fluctuation of water flow and levels in the canal between seasons in order to preserve the structures of the canal system from the damaging effects of ice in the winter.

The name of the Rideau Falls, and consequently the river as well, comes the French word for curtain. For an article regarding the development of the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River system and its important role in Canadian history visit this website.

Here are a few images I took with my camera-in-the-sky looking back towards the falls. The kite and camera equipment were out over the Ottawa river to get these shots (Kite Aerial Photography, or KAP for short). Most vacation snaps of the falls are either side shots from the lookout where am standing, or shots from low down in a tour boat which comes near the base of the falls.

This is Rideau Falls in the winter. Sussex Drive and Old City Hall are at the top of many of the pictures. The river splits into two and the Old City Hall building is actually on an island.

The larger section of the falls is at the left where the lookout is (to the left of that and out of the picture) and the smaller section to the right. The Rideau Falls are at the junction of the Rideau River and the Ottawa River.

These are the smaller of the two sets of falls. You can also see the National Research Council building and the Lester B. Pearson Building (Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada – DFAIT). You can see the Peace Tower at the Parliament Buildings in the distance.
