KAP 2013-1 Prince of Wales Bridge and the Ottawa/Gatineau Skyline in Winter

This Kite Aerial Photography session took place on the Ottawa River shoreline where the Prince of Wales Railway Bridge lands on the Quebec side in the city of Gatineau. Most of the images point towards the Ontario side as they are pictures of the bridge, Lemieux Island and the city of Ottawa skyline. Chaudiere falls is in the middle of the river in the foreground of the aerial skyline photographs of Ottawa/Gatineau.

The Prince of Wales Bridge is not currently in use, and you can see that by the snow on the tracks where only people and dogs have traversed. The bridge is a part of the focus of ongoing discussions regarding rapid transit in the Ottawa/Gatineau region. It has been proposed to operate light rail commuter transit over the bridge.

Actually, one is not supposed to trespass on the bridge as it can be dangerous and accessibility on the Ontario side is difficult due to construction. Despite this, the bridge is often used in model shoots by professional, and not so professional, photographers. Actually, in the picture below, I’m already beyond the sign but hardly in a dangerous location.

A Winter Walk by the Ottawa River

I’m fortunate to live a few minutes walk from the Ottawa River just west of Westboro Beach. I often head there with my camera when light or weather conditions present an interesting opportunity. I went to the river on New Year’s Eve, prompted by huge globs of snowflakes falling from the sky in the hope of capturing some action blurring of falling snow. By the time I got out there the conditions had changed so that plan was off, but I was thankful to have been prompted to get outside because the conditions were still quite nice in other ways.

This first image was taken on the way to the river. The trail to the right is a bike path in the summer. The trail to the left is a short cut taken primarily by dog walkers and people heading to and from the Dominion Transitway station.

The river is frozen over now as we enter the coldest time of the winter season here in Ottawa. Snow levels are still lower than one would expect but there is still lots of time for more. The tree in this image and several others has been photographed many times by me. It is the point of the shoreline that is more or less closest to my home.

Here’s another shot including the same tree but a bit further away and including a nice clump of freeze-dried cattails.

Run off from city of Ottawa streets makes it into the Ottawa River through a number of storm sewer outlets. In the winter, road salt may be included in the flow. In summer, soap from car washing, pesticide runoff from lawn treatments, … In the distance is the same tree shown above.

Not far from Westboro beach, this tree stands just far enough from its neighbours to give a sense of isolation in a tightly framed photograph.

KAP 2011-3 – Where the Madawaska meets the Ottawa – January 29, 2011

This session took place at the Arnprior Municipal Marina where aerial views of the city of Arnprior and the Madawaska River were taken, including the weir/dam, the construction of the new water treatment facility, the marina which is also under redevelopment, and the mouth of the Madawaska River where it enters into the Ottawa River.

I had driven to Arnprior early, leaving Ottawa at about 6:00 am with slippery road conditions and ongoing snow squalls. The main purpose was to attend a Masters Swim Meet. I’ve been taking a sabbatical from serious swimming so I went to photograph the event and my swimmer friends. Despite the weather conditions, I trusted the weather forecast and packed my kite aerial photography gear. Apparently it was expected to clear in the afternoon. The meet concluded with a social breakfast at the Antrim Truck Stop, a regular haunt of the Arnprior club. At about 10:30, as I finished eating, I wondered if the serious snow still falling outside was really going to end and debated going home. With skeptical faith in the weather forecast, I decided to wait and see. For the next two hours I marched around town and the Madawaska riverfront with my SLR and tripod taking some scenic shots (which I haven’t looked at yet). By 12:30, lo and behold the sky cleared. I drove to the Arnprior Municipal Marina where I parked and launched my Fled kite and autokap gear for a couple of hours of KAPping.

Kite aerial photography depends on fine/dry weather because of the exposed electronics plus the fact that one cannot clean off the lens after the gear has been surrendered to the sky.

Just as I was about to call it a day, the wind suddenly had the same idea and the camera descended rapidly as I attempted to haul line as quickly as possible. The camera landed fairly softly on soft ice on the surface of the river, face down. I had to leave it there several minutes until the kite lofted it again. The lens froze over and I left the camera turned on for the next two hours so as to give it chance to melt then dry out without damaging the lens retraction mechanism.

Docks and Ice – Nepean Sailing Club

It was a nice day today for a trip to the Nepean Sailing Club at Dick Bell Park … at least for photographers not sailors.

Late winter/early spring can seem a bit dreary for photography with the dirty ice and dead grass poking through. I decided to make this 3rd aerial outing to Nepean Sailing Club, figuring that it would be a good day for shapes and forms from the air. I had seen the docks poking through the ice last week while driving out to Kanata.

Here are a couple of the shots I took today. You can see more in the KAP 2010-2 gallery on my website.
