I did two kite aerial photography sessions several days apart at opposite ends of the beach named Playa El Palmar, Ixtapa, Mexico. Playa El Palmar is the nearest beach to Casa Candiles, the Bed and Breakfast where we stayed during our vacation. The B&B is about 10 minutes walk from the public access near the south end of the beach (beside the Barcelo Hotel). There are no small hotels or B&Bs on the beach as you will see from the photographs. The buildings are large hotels and condominium complexes.

These images were obtained using a camera suspended below a kite line (Kite Aerial Photography – KAP). Each of the two sessions was with autoKAP, whereby the camera was triggered every 8 to 10 seconds while making a stepwise slow 360 degree rotation. The wind was not strong enough to lift my fully remote-controlled rig.

During the first session on February 16, 2012, I explored the southern end of the beach with my aerial camera. Photos from that session can be viewed in the KAP 2012-4 Gallery.

The second session was on February 22, 2010 and I explored the northern end of the beach, including Marina Ixtapa which is somewhat inland and connected to the Pacific Ocean by a channel. Photos from the second session can be viewed in the KAP 2012-5 Gallery.

In this posting I have included a mix of photos from the two sessions. All of these images are in an around Playa El Palmar.

Displaying Photograph at WestFest

The annual celebration of WestFest in the Westboro community of Ottawa where I live takes place this weekend (June 11, 12 & 13, 2010). Among many other things, WestFest includes a small gallery with 1 art piece by each of the members of the West End Studio Tour (W.E.S.T.).

The West End Studio Tour takes place in September every year and promotes itself in advance during WestFest. Besides the gallery, there is a display tent to encourage art with children with face painting, caricature drawing and art trading cards.

This will be the first year that I will be participating as an artist in the tour. Thus I have place a piece in the WestFest Gallery located in the chapel of All Saints Anglican Church at 347 Richmond Road.

A 16″ x 20″ framed and matted print of the following image of mine can be viewed there:

KAP 2008-8: Marina Chahué and Playa Chahué, Huatulco, Mexico – February 4, 2008

Chahué is a growing community to the extent that most of it looks to be half-built and additional land is being prepared for construction as well. It has a beautiful beach and an active marina. This KAP outing (Kite Aerial Photography) was fraught with wind not strong enough or consistent enough for the kite to lift the camera rig to a significant height above the ground.

KAP 2008-4: Playa Tejoncito, Huatulco, Mexico.

This KAP (Kite Aerial Photography) outing took place on January 27, 2008 while vacationing in Huatulco, Mexico. Towards the Eastern part of Huatulco is Residencial Conejos, a residential community. At the foot of the community lies Playa Tejoncito. This is the name of the beach, not a resort. This beach was until a few years ago a public access beach. Recently private development has made this into a pay-per-use beach which is a contentious issue with a number of the other residents. Nevertheless it is still a reasonable access fee (50 pesos – roughly $5 Canadian) for anyone staying at Agua Azul La Villa (the B&B up the road where we stayed). A 15 minute hike over the point will get you to a free, almost deserted beach, Playa Arena, which was the subject of KAP 2008-3. The B&B can be seen in several of the images in this gallery. More on Agua Azul in KAP 2008-6.

Here are a few of the pictures from my camera in the sky:

KAP 2008-3: Playa Arena, Huatulco, Mexico

This KAP (Kite Aerial Photography) outing took place on January 26, 2008 while vacationing in Huatulco, Mexico. Huatulco is on the Pacific Coast of Mexico in the south part of the country in Oaxaca State. The coastline generally faces to the south, not the west as the coast nears towards Central America. Towards the Eastern part of Huatulco is Residencial Conejos, a residential community. A trail takes you further eastward to Playa Arena, a virtually deserted beach, although the footprints give away the fact that there are occasional visitors. There are three consecutive beaches as you head eastwards, the third one being the most frequented one, with road access, a few fishing boats and a small, very basic local restaurant. Behind the first beach, where I did this KAP session, there is a small plantation of coconut palms and papayas. This visit was during the dry season, and the trees are devoid of foliage. Apparently the rainy season shows a marked contrast in lushness of the vegetation. I’ll have to go back at a different time of year I guess.

Here are a few of the pictures I took from my skyhook camera:
