In June I attended the Windscape Kite Festival as and invited ‘celebrity flyer’ in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. It was my second time invited (last time was in 2011). It gave my wife and I an opportunity to have a mini-holiday out west and we took an extra week exploring southern Saskatchewan in day trips from our accommodation at McMaster Manor Bed & Breakfast near Lafleche, SK. A number of aerial sessions were undertaken. There were also a couple of disappointments where I was at ideal locations with insufficient wind. You win some, you lose some!

Windscape Kite Festival – Swift Current, SK
The festival was two days on the last weekend in June. I was there as an invited guest to demonstrate Kite Aerial Photography. The wind was overpowering much of the time for most of the kite flyers including myself and rain was frequent. Regardless, a number of good images were obtained during three sessions when the bad conditions softened.
Since the kite festival proceedings didn’t begin until 10:00 am each day, I took the time one morning to do some aerial shots of the town of Swift Current and the freight railway lines running through the middle. Light was poor but it was my only opportunity and the images turned out pretty well.
McMaster Manor Bed & Breakfast and Farm
We stayed 4 nights at this B&B near Lafleche, Saskatchewan. We used it as our home base to visit communities in the area and both the east and west blocks of Grasslands National Park. The wind was not kind to me on our day trips. I did, however get two good sessions at the farm property of the B&B. I would highly recommend staying there – great hosts and great part of the world. Just remember …. nothing is close by and that includes shops and restaurants.

I haven’t blogged about my Kite Aerial Photography for awhile. I thought I’d do this one post with an example from each of the six winter sessions that I undertook in the Ottawa region. If you want to see more you can go through to the respective gallery on my website by clicking on the image.
Wakefield, Quebec

Meech Creek Covered Bridge
This is a different covered bridge from the one shown above. It is not far from Wakefield but is closer to Gatineau Park on Chemin Cross Loop. (click on the picture to see more pictures of this location)
Pakenham – Five Span Bridge
This is the Five Arch Stone Bridge (aka Five Span Bridge), a historic bridge located in Pakenham, Ontario on the Mississippi River (Canada). It is only a single-lane bridge but large double-trailer tractor-trailer trucks cross frequently. (click on the picture to see more pictures of this location)

Carleton Place
Carleton Place is on the Mississippi River (Canada). Bridge Street and the Town Hall are prominent in a couple of the photographs in this gallery. Downstream in the distance there is a weir as well as a set of rapids. (click on the picture to see more pictures of this location)
Deschenes Rapids
Deschenes Rapids near Ottawa, Ontario in the Ottawa River. Britannia Yacht Club is on the far side (Ontario). On the near side in Quebec is the ruins of a mill within the rapids. (click on the picture to see more pictures of this location)

Pictures of Cuba
Umbrella Man is the title of the newest of Peggy Blair’s Inspector Ramirez novels, a series based in Havana, Cuba.
The book launch of Umbrella Man, combined with a gallery show of Cuba Photography will take place at Cake and Shake, a coffee shop in the Parkdale Market area of Ottawa.
There will be a photography exhibit by several photographers including myself in support of Peggy’s book launch.

Karen’s hobby farm. The main buildings and paddocks.
My sister, Karen, purchased a home/hobby farm in the country near Spencerville, Ontario this year. Karen owns one horse and currently boards 3 more.
After another long break from Kite Aerial Photography, again due to back issues, I went to my sister’s place for Thanksgiving and decided it was time to get out the kite gear. Having had back surgery this summer it was with some caution that I approached this task. I had my niece, Stephanie, by my side so I could hand over if I needed to. She also helped with setting up the kite and holding the line while I mounted the camera rig. Things went well as far as my back was concerned with squatting to assemble the kite being the most difficult task. It was a gusty day and there were tall trees in the direction I was flying. A few nose-dives had me sweating while taking flight recovery measures. The camera was swinging to and fro but in spite of this I came away with a few good images of Karen’s property.

As mentioned in my previous post, I’m in the current show at Foyer Gallery: As Is. It continues until October 18th, 2015 and my work consists of photographs made in Havana, Cuba in 2014.
Each artist in the show has had a video prepared presenting their individual work. Mine turned out reasonable well, considering it was unscripted, unrehearsed and ‘almost’ one take.

Since my previous post I have sold one image and replaced it with a different Havana image.

I’m in the current show at Foyer Gallery which is titled As Is. It started this week, Tuesday September 29th and continues until October 18th, 2015. I have 16 pieces on show. There are 3 other artists participating: Yves Jardon (photography), Erika Farkas (painting) and Eiko Emori (glass sculpture). My work consists of photographs made in Havana, Cuba in 2014.
The vernissage (open house) is Saturday, October 3 from 1:00 to 4:00 and I will be there to answer any questions.

Today I have launched a new line of greeting cards which I will start to make available at exhibitions in which I’m involved. Also you can order them directly from me. There are more than 50 titles in my initial selection. A broad range of subjects and styles is presented for starters. Over time I plan to develop several particular themes. The growing selection can be viewed in my Rob’s Photo Cards on Etsy storefront.

I will add new titles periodically. Drop by and have a look from time to time.
Of course, with a few exceptions, almost any image on my website can be developed into a greeting card. Ask!
