KAP 2013-5 – Tallow Beach, Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia

A recent four week trip to Australia provided several opportunities for kite aerial photography. Byron Bay is one place we stayed for a few days. It is a community that seems to attract hippie wannabees, both young and old. It’s a nice place to visit but for us the weather was, shall we say, mixed.

My fourth Australian KAP session was at Tallow Beach, not far from Byron Bay but on the opposite side of Cape Byron and the Byron Lighthouse. Cape Byron, by the way, is the easternmost point in Australia. I went to Tallow Beach with the hope of getting beach landscapes as well as views of the cape and lighthouse. With weather continuing to be “iffy” I spent a fair amount of time with the kite on the ground. The rain stayed away but I was sensing that I might be allergic to lightning so I was being cautious. I didn’t see any lightning but there were some pretty dark clouds and you are only allowed one chance of getting it wrong. The worst clouds were nearest the cape so I didn’t venture close for very long and I didn’t fly too high. Consequently I didn’t get the type of lighthouse shots I had been planning for. Distant shots of the cape suffered from the poor lighting under the grey conditions. I spent much time trying to capture beach aerials of people walking and jogging by. It was easier to judge the lighting conditions in the area immediate around me and I was keeping the gear low.

These photographs were taken using a remote-controlled camera suspended below a kite line (Kite Aerial Photography – KAP).

KAP 2013-3 – Cape Woolamai Beach, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia

A recent four week trip to Australia provided several opportunities for kite aerial photography. This second session was in on Cape Woolamai Beach on Phillip Island. We were en route to watch the Penguin Parade where every evening hundreds of the smallest penguins in the world, Little Blue Penguins (aka Fairy Penguins) come out of the water and head for burrows on shore.

Cape Woolamai Beach was mainly a sand beach but there was some rocky shoreline interspersed as one approached the end of the cape. There were also sand dunes that evolved into cliffs the further you went towards the end of the cape. This was one of my favourite KAP sessions from the holiday and I was really happy with the landscapes and the straight down aerial abstracts that I was fortunate to obtain in the camera.

I did two kite aerial photography sessions several days apart at opposite ends of the beach named Playa El Palmar, Ixtapa, Mexico. Playa El Palmar is the nearest beach to Casa Candiles, the Bed and Breakfast where we stayed during our vacation. The B&B is about 10 minutes walk from the public access near the south end of the beach (beside the Barcelo Hotel). There are no small hotels or B&Bs on the beach as you will see from the photographs. The buildings are large hotels and condominium complexes.

These images were obtained using a camera suspended below a kite line (Kite Aerial Photography – KAP). Each of the two sessions was with autoKAP, whereby the camera was triggered every 8 to 10 seconds while making a stepwise slow 360 degree rotation. The wind was not strong enough to lift my fully remote-controlled rig.

During the first session on February 16, 2012, I explored the southern end of the beach with my aerial camera. Photos from that session can be viewed in the KAP 2012-4 Gallery.

The second session was on February 22, 2010 and I explored the northern end of the beach, including Marina Ixtapa which is somewhat inland and connected to the Pacific Ocean by a channel. Photos from the second session can be viewed in the KAP 2012-5 Gallery.

In this posting I have included a mix of photos from the two sessions. All of these images are in an around Playa El Palmar.

KAP 2012-3 – Barra de Potosi, Mexico

While on vacation in Ixtapa, Mexico, the owner of our Bed & Breakfast, Casa Candiles, took us on a couple of field trips. One of these was to Barra de Potosi, about a 1/2 hour’s drive south along the Pacific Coast from Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo. We planned to have a few hours there doing beach stuff and having lunch at one of the many beachside restaurants. It gave me time to fly kites as well as explore with my SLR. I did the terrestrial camera work first because I wanted to check out where would be best for catching the breeze for my aerial photography later. The exploration also gave me an idea of what I might target on once the camera gear was in the air. As the breeze was minimal, I was limited to autoKAP, meaning that I did not have remote control over the aerial camera equipment. Instead the camera shoots by itself periodically while making small rotations to change the view.

This is an assortment of images that were taken either with my earthbound SLR or with my kite aerial photography equipment. More images from the kite aerial photography session can be viewed in my KAP 2012-3 – Barra de Potosi, Mexico Gallery. More images from the terrestrial walk-about can be seen in the Barra de Potosi Gallery in the main Mexico section on my website.
