Saskatchewan Aerial Photography

In June I attended the Windscape Kite Festival as and invited ‘celebrity flyer’ in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. It was my second time invited (last time was in 2011). It gave my wife and I an opportunity to have a mini-holiday out west and we took an extra week exploring southern Saskatchewan in day trips from our accommodation at McMaster Manor Bed & Breakfast near Lafleche, SK. A number of aerial sessions were undertaken. There were also a couple of disappointments where I was at ideal locations with insufficient wind. You win some, you lose some!

Windscape Kite Festival – Swift Current, SK

The festival was two days on the last weekend in June. I was there as an invited guest to demonstrate Kite Aerial Photography. The wind was overpowering much of the time for most of the kite flyers including myself and rain was frequent. Regardless, a number of good images were obtained during three sessions when the bad conditions softened.

 

Swift Current Railway Lines

Since the kite festival proceedings didn’t begin until 10:00 am each day, I took the time one morning to do some aerial shots of the town of Swift Current and the freight railway lines running through the middle. Light was poor but it was my only opportunity and the images turned out pretty well.

 

McMaster Manor Bed & Breakfast and Farm

We stayed 4 nights at this B&B near Lafleche, Saskatchewan. We used it as our home base to visit communities in the area and both the east and west blocks of Grasslands National Park. The wind was not kind to me on our day trips. I did, however get two good sessions at the farm property of the B&B. I would highly recommend staying there – great hosts and great part of the world. Just remember …. nothing is close by and that includes shops and restaurants.

Four of my images taken of (not from) kites at the Windscape Kite Festival 2011. For part of the weekend, conditions were too windy for me to do Kite Aerial Photography at the festival, so I spent the time doing “terrestrial”, from-the-ground shots of other kites and fliers. Recently, four of these images were selected by Getty Images for inclusion in their catalogue for exclusive licensing by them.

Windscape Kite Festival – 2011

Earlier I reported on the “aerial” part of my involvement at the 2011 Windscape Kite Festival. See KAP 2011-7 – Windscape Kite Festival – Swift Current, Saskatchewan – June 25 & 26, 2011. I mentioned that after the first morning I had to abandon my own kiting efforts (doing Kite Aerial Photography) but I substituted some ground-based photography of the people and the kites. Finally I have processed these images and I have placed almost 200 of them in a Windscape Kite Festival 2011 gallery on my website as well as in a Facebook album.

KAP 2011-7 – Windscape Kite Festival – Swift Current, Saskatchewan – June 25 & 26, 2011

The Windscape Kite Festival is an annual event held in Swift Current Saskatchewan. Each year a number of “specialty” kite flyers are invited and I was one of the chosen to demonstrate Kite Aerial Photography (KAP). I was also given a display area for a number of my prints and I donated a print to the Silent Auction. I was grateful for the all expenses paid mini-holiday to go fly my aerial photography gear and the chance to meet the other brands of specialty kite flyers. I was also asked to offer back to the organizers a few aerial shots of the proceedings for possible use in future year’s publicity campaign.

The Saturday morning the winds were fairly strong but I managed to do some Kite Aerial Photography. Since I couldn’t be sure that the weather was going to co-operate all weekend for aerial photography, I quickly dashed around to do as many overall perspective shots as I could so that my obligations to provide photography to the organizers could be fulfilled. In the end I was thankful I had done that because from Saturday lunch time to the end of festival the wind was too strong for many forms of kite flying. I tried briefly Sunday afternoon but could hardly hold onto the gear and after a few shots I had to abandon the Sunday session. The only people flying by that time were the stunt kite people who could just manage to use their kites in such conditions.

I used the non-flying time to answer questions about KAP and also to do some ground based photography of celebrity kiters and kites themselves. I’ll post some of these shots in another gallery in the near future.

This gallery contains the aerial shots that I took the Saturday morning of the festival and one shot that I managed in the five minute Sunday afternoon flight.
