Virtual Ride For Parkinson’s Research

PARKINSON’S RESEARCH AT THE OTTAWA HOSPITAL

“Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s. … More than 100,000 Canadians live with Parkinson’s, including 8,000 here in Ottawa. Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that primarily affects voluntary, controlled movement. The exact cause of the disease is unknown. Discovered almost 200 years ago, there is still no cure or proven treatment available to slow its relentless progression. People can develop Parkinson’s disease at any time in their life.”

“Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital are investigating this disease to learn more to help better care for patients and ultimately to find a cure”.

MY BACKGROUND WITH PARKINSON’S

My journey with Parkinson’s (PD) started with a diagnosis in 2018 at 64 years of age and began with a tremor in my right arm and hand. Although other symptoms are making their presence known, I feel fortunate that PD has progressed fairly slowly to date.

Exercise has been shown to benefit Parkinson’s patients by alleviating some of the current symptoms as well as postponing its advancement over time. Bicycling is an activity that many with Parkinson’s can continue to enjoy as their condition worsens, and fortunately for me it is an activity that I already enjoy. I also benefit from swimming and walking. During the pandemic, with the pools closed and periodic isolation, my bike trainer has been the most important means for me to get the intensive exercise needed.

FUNDRAISING FOR PARKINSON’S RESEARCH

In the past I have participated in three Parkinson’s Research Fundraisers associated with The Ottawa Hospital: Lap the Gats (cycling), THE RIDE (cycling), and the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend 2020 5K Walk.

The combined fundraising total from these three years exceeded $10,000.

For 2022 I have created this cycling fundraising challenge to enable myself, and anyone else who wishes to join with me, to raise funds in support of Parkinson’s Research at The Ottawa Hospital.

MY CHALLENGE

I will do my biking challenge on an indoor bike trainer using the computer gaming app called ZWIFT. My goal is to cycle a total of 1000 km over the two month period of April and May 2022.

JOIN THE TEAM

To take part in the event, join the team by registering yourself using the JOIN THE TEAM button on the Team Page. Anyone can participate. See the Team page for more information.

DONATE

You don’t have to participate in the bike challenge to help the cause. You can make a donation. Please pledge support for this cause by making a secure online donation through me or through one of the other team members. The combined funds raised by the team will be directed specifically towards Parkinson’s Disease Research at The Ottawa Hospital. The Ottawa Hospital will provide you with a tax receipt for your donation.

Thanks for your support.

Sayulita, Mexico

Pelicans, Playa Carricitos, Sayulita, Mexico

My wife and I were among the many travellers who had to cut short their winter vacation to return home as a consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak. Our plan was for 2 weeks in Sayulita, Mexico with friends and then 1 week in Cancun with our daughters’ families. The family get-together, which had been planned to replace a Christmas gathering, had to be scrapped and we returned to Ottawa after the two weeks. It was for the best but we were disappointed.

Sayulita was nevertheless a wonderful time and I hope you will enjoy a visit to my Sayulita, Mexico website gallery. Here are a few examples which, if clicked, lead you to the respective page at my Print-On-Demand partner site, Pixels.com.

Sponsor Our Walk to Promote Parkinson’s Disease Research

This is my third year raising funds for Parkinson’s Disease research. Why? Because 3 years ago I began my own journey with PD.

Instead of cycling as in the past, this year I am doing a 5K walk as part of the Ottawa Race Weekend. The actual event weekend was cancelled due to COVID-19, but instead it has gone virtual. Jayne and I are part of the PIPR team (Partners Investing in Parkinson’s Research). All funds raised by us go towards Parkinson’s Disease Research at The Ottawa Hospital.

If you are affected by current circumstances and prefer to pass, we understand.

All the best to you in these trying times.

CMAJ Cover Photo

CMAJ Cover Photo

I’m very pleased that the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) has used one of my images for the cover of the October, 2019 issue. This issue has a particular focus on Parkinson’s Disease, a community I’m getting to know all too well as I was diagnosed with PD two years ago.

I call this image “Forest Trail Abstract” and you can view the entire (horizontal format) image on my website: https://www.robhuntley.ca/Art/Abstract-Camera/i-CzpPWMd

First KAP session for over 2 years

After a 2 1/2 year hiatus from kite aerial photography (due to back issues and other considerations) I did a short session last week to make sure all the equipment worked and to get myself reacquainted. All this in preparation for the Windscape Kite Festival in Swift Current, Saskatchewan where I have been invited to again (3rd time) participate in demonstrating aerial photography using a kite.

This flying session took place at the soccer fields in WC Levesque Park near the Stonebridge Trail in Barrhaven (outlying suburb of Ottawa) where I now live. I took just a few shots of the park, nearby housing and the Jock River.

Five-Span Stone Bridge in Pakenham, Ontario

Five-Span Stone Bridge in Pakenham, Ontario

Apparently the only one of its kind in North America, the 5 Arch Stone Bridge on Ontario’s Mississippi River is in Pakenham, Ontario, about 45 minutes from Ottawa. I’ve been several times and taken photographs at different times of year. This time I went with Bruce Amos and Murray McComb to photograph the Mississippi River with high spring water levels. Here are a few shots from that day. Visit my website gallery to see more.
