First KAP session for over 2 years

After a 2 1/2 year hiatus from kite aerial photography (due to back issues and other considerations) I did a short session last week to make sure all the equipment worked and to get myself reacquainted. All this in preparation for the Windscape Kite Festival in Swift Current, Saskatchewan where I have been invited to again (3rd time) participate in demonstrating aerial photography using a kite.

This flying session took place at the soccer fields in WC Levesque Park near the Stonebridge Trail in Barrhaven (outlying suburb of Ottawa) where I now live. I took just a few shots of the park, nearby housing and the Jock River.

Saskatchewan Aerial Photography

In June I attended the Windscape Kite Festival as and invited ‘celebrity flyer’ in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. It was my second time invited (last time was in 2011). It gave my wife and I an opportunity to have a mini-holiday out west and we took an extra week exploring southern Saskatchewan in day trips from our accommodation at McMaster Manor Bed & Breakfast near Lafleche, SK. A number of aerial sessions were undertaken. There were also a couple of disappointments where I was at ideal locations with insufficient wind. You win some, you lose some!

Here is a sample from the several locations where I flew my kite aerial gear. Click through to the galleries on my website to see many more images from each session.

Windscape Kite Festival – Swift Current, SK

The festival was two days on the last weekend in June. I was there as an invited guest to demonstrate Kite Aerial Photography. The wind was overpowering much of the time for most of the kite flyers including myself and rain was frequent. Regardless, a number of good images were obtained during three sessions when the bad conditions softened.

Swift Current Railway Lines

Since the kite festival proceedings didn’t begin until 10:00 am each day, I took the time one morning to do some aerial shots of the town of Swift Current and the freight railway lines running through the middle. Light was poor but it was my only opportunity and the images turned out pretty well.

McMaster Manor Bed & Breakfast and Farm

We stayed 4 nights at this B&B near Lafleche, Saskatchewan. We used it as our home base to visit communities in the area and both the east and west blocks of Grasslands National Park. The wind was not kind to me on our day trips. I did, however get two good sessions at the farm property of the B&B. I would highly recommend staying there – great hosts and great part of the world. Just remember …. nothing is close by and that includes shops and restaurants.

Kite Aerial Photography Highlights From Last Winter

I haven’t blogged about my Kite Aerial Photography for awhile. I thought I’d do this one post with an example from each of the six winter sessions that I undertook in the Ottawa region. If you want to see more you can go through to the respective gallery on my website by clicking on the image.

Overflight Stock – Aerial Stock Photography

Overflight Stock - Aerial Photography

I’m happy to report that I have teamed up with a new Canadian aerial stock photography company named Overflight Stock. It has been launched by Peter Chigmaroff, a professional stock photographer/videographer with over 25 years of experience producing stock content for many of the world’s top libraries. Depending upon the image, Overflight Stock offers both exclusive and non-exclusive licensing, rights managed and royalty free, aerial stock photography and videography.

I have started to upload to the site and a few of my kite aerial photography images have started to appear, such as the one below of spring thaw on Lake Superior. Regional indexing of the site will be enhanced as the volume of stock photography for each region increases. For now my work is simply listed under the general heading of  “Canada Stock Photos“. Search “Rob Huntley” to find my small but growing collection.

Visit www.overflightstock.com when you have aerial stock photography requirements.

El Charco Del Ingenio, San Miguel de Allende

During our February 2015 trip to San Miguel de Allende we visited El Charco Del Ingenio, a renowned botanical gardens important for it’s collection of endemic as well as rescued cacti. There are greenhouses which contain important specimens, outdoor collections in well managed garden beds, and of course a coffee shop, collectibles store and also a display of small cacti for sale in pots. Unfortunately it is illegal to take cacti out of Mexico and the penalties can be severe. So we just had to look. In addition there is a very large nature preserve riddled with hiking trails and wonderful views of canyons, the city of San Miguel de Allende, a hacienda ruins and cactus habitat. The grounds are so extensive and wonderful we spent two days of our 10-day vacation at El Charco Del Ingenio.

San Miguel de Allende

We took a winter vacation early in the year (2015) in San Miguel de Allende. It is a popular travel destination and photographer destination; an enclave of expatriates. In some ways it is not Mexico. In a lot of ways it is Mexico. Be prepared for walking up and down hills with narrow sidewalks and cobblestones.

KAP 2015-8 – Montreal River, Ontario

Lake Superior at the mouth of the Montreal River.

Lake Superior at the mouth of the Montreal River.

This kite aerial photography (KAP) session took place about 3 days into my journey west which had been planned as a 30-day photographic trip to the west coast and return to Ottawa via the USA. However, a day or two after this I suffered intense back pain which I sustained while my friend, Ted Welch, drove the rest of the way to Victoria, B.C. Subsequently I had two long stays in hospital, 9 days in Victoria and 8 days in Ottawa following surgery. Needless to say, this was not how my summer had been planned.

Here we were at the Montreal River, near the community of Montreal River Harbour. The river empties into Lake Superior at the Twilight Resort. I thank Dan Miles of Twilight Resort for allowing us access to his property in the off-season in order to take these pictures. Unfortunately the wind dropped not long after I put the kite in the air. Only a few nice shots were captured during this time. I would have liked to get more altitude to get a better perspective of the river entering the lake and to get a shot with the whole resort in a single frame.

KAP 2015-9 – Karen’s Place

Karen’s hobby farm. The main buildings and paddocks.

My sister, Karen, purchased a home/hobby farm in the country near Spencerville, Ontario this year. Karen owns one horse and currently boards 3 more.

After another long break from Kite Aerial Photography, again due to back issues, I went to my sister’s place for Thanksgiving and decided it was time to get out the kite gear. Having had back surgery this summer it was with some caution that I approached this task. I had my niece, Stephanie, by my side so I could hand over if I needed to. She also helped with setting up the kite and holding the line while I mounted the camera rig. Things went well as far as my back was concerned with squatting to assemble the kite being the most difficult task. It was a gusty day and there were tall trees in the direction I was flying. A few nose-dives had me sweating while taking flight recovery measures. The camera was swinging to and fro but in spite of this I came away with a few good images of Karen’s property.
